Das Orakel - Johann Adam Hiller (1753)

'Das Orakel' is a singspiel from the year 1753 by the composer Johann Adam Hiller to the libretto of Christian F├╝rchtegott Gellert. Unfortunately however the opera was lost and fell into nonexistence.

In 2011 an exceptionally old, handwritten piano score appeared in a recycling plant. Despite obligation not to discern between what should and should not be disposed of, the anonymous finder of the score contacted the Th├╝ringisches Landesmusikarchiv in the Weimar Musikhochschule. It was soon dicovered that the score was a piano reduction of Hiller's earliest opera, 'Das Orakel'.

One year later it was decided to reconstruct and reorchestrate the opera fit for performance. This task eventually landed on myself. I thus spent a great deal of time heavily researching the music of Hiller as well as other local composers active and publically influential in the late 1740s to 1750s; Johann Adolf Hasse, Carl Heinrich Graun, etc. After roughly 9 months of work the reconstruction was complete.

The instrumentation for the orchestra was based on the standards which dictated what was concidered a small or large ensemble at that time. Although it is most likely that Hiller's original ensemble was far smaller, we nevertheless opted for an orchestra at the larger end of the spectrum - 2 Fl, 2 Ob, 2 Bn, 2 Hn, Strings + Basso continuo.
